Named storms: why the roofing surge arrives with notice.

The one demand event a roofing company can see coming, and the one most reliably treated as a surprise.

A named storm is a published forecast that property damage is coming, which makes the roofing call surge behind it the most predictable demand event of the year. The Met Office names a storm precisely when it expects impacts severe enough to warrant an amber or red warning, and it issues warnings up to seven days ahead. The calls that follow are not a surprise. They are the announced consequence of one.

That is the short answer. The longer one is worth having, because almost everything written about storm demand treats it as a spike to absorb — and the interesting question is what a contractor does with the notice.

What does it mean when the Met Office names a storm?

It means the forecast has crossed a damage threshold, not a wind speed. The Met Office names a storm when it is expected to cause disruption or damage significant enough to warrant an amber or red warning. The name is the output of that judgement, not a label attached to bad weather in general.

The system has run since 2015, jointly with Met Éireann in Ireland and the KNMI in the Netherlands, and each season’s list of names is published in September for the year ahead. Storms are usually named for wind, but heavy rain likely to cause flooding and significant snowfall both qualify.

For most industries that is meteorological trivia. For a roofing company it is a forward order book, and it arrives with a name attached.

Why is a named storm a demand forecast?

Because the criterion for naming and the criterion for roofing work are the same criterion. An amber warning covers the “potential risk to life and property”. A red warning expects “possibly widespread damage to property and infrastructure”. A roofing business does not need to interpret that. Somebody has already done the interpreting and published it.

The naming decision and the amber threshold are the same event. So the moment a storm has a name, a roofing contractor has been told — in public, by the national forecaster, several days out — that property damage is expected across a defined area on a defined day.

How much work does a storm season actually represent?

Enough that the insurance industry reports it as a line of its own. The Association of British Insurers put storm damage to homes at £244 million in 2025, a 32% rise on the previous year, with the average storm payout climbing £750 to £2,450. Weather-related property claims across the year came to £1.2 billion, up 14%.

Two honest caveats before anyone builds a forecast on those numbers. They are insurer payouts rather than roofing revenue, and they cover every kind of weather damage rather than roofs alone. What they establish is direction and scale, not a market size: the events driving those claims are the same events driving the calls, and both are getting larger.

The part worth sitting with is the average. A £2,450 payout is a repair, not a re-roof. The storm surge is not mostly made of the large jobs that justify a site visit next week — it is made of urgent, mid-sized work that goes to whoever answers.

Why does a surge break an office that copes fine the rest of the year?

Because the constraint changes from how many calls you can handle to how many you can handle at once. A busy week spreads enquiries across working hours, and one capable person answering in sequence absorbs it. A storm compresses the same volume into a few evening hours, and sequence stops working.

Thirty is the theoretical ceiling and it is not the real one, because storm calls do not arrive evenly spaced. They cluster in the half hour after the wind drops and people go outside to look. A queue that would be comfortable spread across a day produces an engaged tone when it arrives in twenty minutes.

And an engaged tone during a storm is not a deferred enquiry. The homeowner has water coming in and a list of four local roofers. The research on response time is widely misquoted, but the part that holds up is the part that matters here: for urgent work, being first to answer is most of the decision.

What can a roofing company actually do with the notice?

Decide what happens to an evening enquiry before the evening arrives, because nothing can be arranged once the calls are landing. The warning window is the entire opportunity, and most of what is useful in it is organisational rather than technical.

Agree who is on call and for what, so “emergency” means something specific rather than whatever the person answering decides at nine at night. Establish the questions that separate an active leak from a re-roof quote in the spring, because that distinction governs everything downstream. Decide in advance which jobs are worth a same-night visit and which are honestly a morning appointment — and be willing to tell callers the second one.
